Smith, 80, well known Roman and member of a pioneer Everett Springs family died at his home, 101 Webster St. at 12:40 am Monday, Mr. Smith had been in ill health for the past three years and his condition had been serious for four weeks. Mr. Smith was born in Everett Springs, December 17, 1879, son of the late Anna Mann Smith and Pressley B. Smith, prominent and pioneer Floyd Countians. He had resided in Rome and Floyd County his entire life, Mr. Smith was a member of the Mt. Tabor Methodist Church of Everett Springs but attended the West Rome Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Bible class and was active in church work until ill health forced him to curtail his activities. He was a member of the Lindale Masonic Lodge of Masons. Prior to his retirement several years ago, Mr. Smith was employed by the Fairbanks Co. of Rome. Surviving are his widow the former Evie Ann Smith Myers, to whom he was married Dec. 22, 1920; three sisters, Mrs. W. L. Dew, Americus, Mrs. Lucille S. Johnson, Birmingham, Ala., Mrs. Paul Keys of Rome; five brothers, Dr. T. F. Smith of Rossville, Grady of Jessup, T. W. of Resaca, Prater of Dalton and Walter Smith of Calhoun. Six grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the West Rome Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Cecil Tompkins, pastor of the Congregational Holiness Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot of East View Cemetery. The body will lie in state at Jennings Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. today. At other hours the family will be at 3 Webster St. Active pallbearers include: Harper H. Welch, Lon Frazier, W. L. Duke, J. L. Massey, Monroe Tinsley and Otis Putman. Honorary pallbearers will include members of the Men’s Bible Class of the West Rome Baptist Church. Jennings Funeral Home of Rome has charge of arrangements.
