Stephens wend@bellsouth.net July 11, 2004, 4:45 pm The Rome News Tribune, Tuesday, December 22, 1959 Funeral services for George Elrod, Sr., 52, who was serving his fifth term as mayor of the town of White, were conducted at 2:30 p.m., today at the White Methodist Church, the Rev. Walter S. Adams, the Rev. Harold Fuller and the Rev. W. A Medford officiating. Burial was in the White Cemetery, with the Owen Funeral Home directing. Mr. Elrod died at his home Sunday after an extended illness. During his tenure as mayor, many town improvements were made, including the installation of a water works system. He was a member of the Whit Kiwanis Club, Woodmen of the World and a steward of the White Methodist Church. Mr. Elrod was a native of Bartow County and for many years had been associated with Jones Mercantile Co. in Cartersville. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Zelma pinion; a daughter, Miss Sue Fay Elrod; two sons, George Elrod Jr., Montgomery, Ala. And James G. Elrod, Valdosta; his mother, Mrs. George W. Elrod, Woodbury; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Bell, Chamblee and Mrs. Steve Clements, Woodbury; and a brother, J. C. Elrod Woodbury.
