The first entry is a deed dated 12 Jan. 1786 and recorded 1 May 1786. The next entry is a deed recorded 8 March 1787. The third and fourth entries are deeds recorded 19 Feb. 1787. After that point, it seems the book is more or less in order. The clerk perhaps originally used the folio method of page numbering, and some later clerk appears to have added "a" and "b" on some pages, for example, folio 7 is renumbered as pages 7a and 7b. This deed appears on the left-hand page of what appears to have originally been numbered as folio 16.] This Indenture made this second Day of January in the year of our Lord Christ One Thousand Seven Hundred & Eighty eight and in the twelfth Year of the Independence of the United States of America Between Between John Payne and Nancy his Wife of the County of Franklin and State of Georgia of the One part and William Cawthon of said State and County of the Other part Witnesseth that the said John Payne and Nancy his Wife for and in consideration of the sum of One Hundred Pounds Ster. the Receipt whereof the said John Payne and Nancy his Wife doth hereby acknowledge Hath Given Granted Bargained sold aliened and confirmed and by these presents Doth Give Grant Bargain and sell alienate and Confirm unto the said William Cawthon all that Tract or parcell of Land containing One Hundred and twenty Acres more or less lying and being on the South Side of Toogaloe River Begining at the mouth of said Cawthons Spring Branch Running thence to the Head of said Branch Thence straight Courtse to said Paynes [back ?] line, Including said Cawthons Improvement where he now lives it being part of A Larger Tract of Land granted to the said John Payne the 15th Day of November 1785 also the Reversion and Reversions Remainder & Remainders Rights Interest Claims and Demands whatever of them the said John Payne and Nancy his Wife of in and to that Tract or parcell of Land and premisses and every part thereof To have and to hold the said Tract of Land and all and Singular the said premisses above mentioned and appertenances unto the said William Cawthon his Heirs and assigns for ever to the only proper use and behoof of the said William Cawthon his Heirs and assigns for ever and He the said John Payne and Nancy his Wife for them and their Heirs the said Tract or parcell of Land and premisses and every part thereof against Him and his heirs and against all and every other person or persons Whatever unto the said William Cawthon his Heirs and assigns for ever shall & will warrant and forever Defend In Witness whereof I the said John Payne and Nancy my Wife Hath Hereunto sett Our Hands and Seals the Day & Date first above Written Signed Sealed and Delivered ) John Payne (seal) in the presence of us ) her Larkin Cleveland J. Perhaps there would have been a more extensive entry indicating how the deed was proven and when it was recorded, but the clerk chose not to continue onto the next page of the book to include it.] Submitted by: Robert W.
