It's been six years since D.J. Maxwell received one of the best friends he will 
ever have, his guide dog, Anderson.

"He has been a trusted companion," Maxwell, who is legally blind from a cancerous 
tumor, said. The two went through Emmanuel College together, both getting 
diplomas.

"They gave Anderson a degree in dogology," Maxwell chuckled. "They said he went to 
classes so he deserved a degree as well."

Since graduation, Maxwell has been living in an apartment in Franklin Springs and 
makes a living doing som online sales, putting out some gumball machines, 
preaching and singing.

The time has passed quickly for Maxwell and Anderson and now a day has come that 
Maxwell was not prepared for, Anderson's retirement.

"He has allowed me to be an independent person," Maxwell said of the devoted dog. 
"It is going to be tough to let him go, but he deserves to enjoy life and just be 
a pet now."

With Anderson going into retirement, D.J. is working on getting another dog, and 
as he did six years ago, he is hoping folks will help with the $10,000 needed for 
the new dog.

"I would appreciate any support," D.J. said. "Whether it be on the campus of 
Emmanuel College, church or at the grocery store, most people know me and my big 
smile."

D.J., who is getting the new dog from Palmetto S.E. Guide Dogs, by possibly 
January, is hoping for a friend as devoted as Anderson has been.

There are some friends for which goodbye is hard to say.
