Washington--A Smithsonian scientist said Wednesday it is "quite likely" that a 
mysterious explosion heard at Greenville, S.C., was due to a meteorite exploding 
several miles aloft.

Dr. W. Foshag, head curator of the Smithsonian's department of geology, said he 
had no direct evidence that a meteorite actually had exploded but he told a 
reporter the circumstances suggested the detonation was of celestial origin.
