CHEEK 34 939 499, Company I. 2990th Infantry for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on 7 April, 1945, in the vicnity of Westerfelde, Germany. Although practically in a star of physical exhaustion Private CHEEK and a comrade of their own volition went forward under heavy artillery fire in an attempt to rescue several wounded comrades who lay helpless in an open field. Alternately running and crawling they made their way forward. Nearing their wounded comrades the were met by direct enemy machine gun fire and forced to take hasty cover. They continued undaunted and upon reaching their wounded comrades succeeded in removing them to a position of safety where immediate first aid was given and from which they were evacuated to an aid station. The courage, fortitude and loyalty to comrades at arms displayed by Private CHEEK reflect distinction upon himself and the Infantry of the United States Army. Entered military service from Toccoa, Ga. Pfc. Cheek is in Reins, France. He has been wounded twice in service. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Dwain Cheek of Lavonia.
