CARNESVILLE--The first buses pulled in right on time and the kids showed plenty of 
excitement as they arrived for their first day of school at the new South Franklin 
Elementary School campus on Highway 145 south of Carnesville. But Franklin County 
Schools Superintendent Melanie Burton-Brown may have been even more excited as she 
welcomed the students in. "I got a bit teary and emotional as I got there this 
morning," she said. "It's hard to believe this is really happening." Assistant 
Principal Natalie Erskine helped direct students who needed to have their 
backpacks checked. The new school welcomed parents for an Open House Tuesday ahead 
of Wednesday's first day.
