The patrol reported one of the car's eight occupants as saying the car was "going across the tracks and the first thing we knew the train hit us." The accident occurred at a Southern Railway crossing in the northern city limits of Lavonia. Identified by the State Patrol as dead were; Oscar burton, driver of the car, of Martin; B. C. Ellis, of Martin; Johnny Ray Strange and Bobby Brock, both of Toccoa. Four other Negro youths were also in the car, police said. Two were held for treatment at a hospital and two were treated and released.
