Baker, prominent in Royston business affairs for many years, announces his candidacy herewith for the state senate. Mr. Baker was born and reared in this section, coming to Royston and becoming identified with local markets when quite a young man. During the nineties and following the turn of the century, Mr. Baker was one of the leading cotton and fertilizer men of Georgia. Of recent years he has had mill connections and bought cotton over a large territory. But few men are better known than Dick Baker. He has served Royston as mayor, councilman and in other capacities a number of times, but, heretofore, has never asked for a public office aside from city affairs. If elected, Mr. Baker will ably represent the people of this section. His announcement as follows: To the People of Franklin County: I hereby announce my candidacy for the State Senate subject to the rules of the Democratic primary September 12. My friends know that I have devoted the greater part of my life and what money I once had trying to better the conditions of my section of the state, especially the farming interest. As a neighbor and one of you, I humbly ask the vote of those who believe I will conscientiously and to the best of my ability represent their interest in the State Senate. If elected I will go to this high office unmaligned and unfettered with any person or special interest but just as I have lived among you. It is not my way of thinking to try to go into this office on another man's coat tail. I am standing on my past record and performance. You know our district is largely--almost entirely a farming section and therefore my special efforts will be to put forth for those who till the soil, and upon whose betterment and protection depends so greatly the success of all classes and all industries. I pledge my utmost ability to work for legislations which will improve conditions of the farmers of our own section. I have lived in this section all my life. I believe I know your problems and troubles as well as anyone and I pledge my best, my very best, efforts to do everything I can to help the people in this section whom I love so well. For the support and influence of every man and woman in the county I will be most grateful.
