Gillespie, Carnesville World Word II hero, was recently honored at Camp Gordon when he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. Colonel Robert E. Guthrie, Commanding Officer of the post made the presentation to the ex-Tech-Sergeant at the Officers Club at a ceremony held in the presences of the Staff Officers and relatives and friends of Mr. Gillespie. The veteran, who was attached to the 10th Air Force in the China-Burma-India Theater received the DFC "for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as aerial engineer from 18 January 1945 to 26 February 1945 over territory in Burman and China where exposure to enemy fire was probable and expected. Flying in unarmed cargo aircraft instrument weather over hazardous terrain, these crew members brought equipment and supplies to the forward areas. Their devotion to duty and degree of efficiency above and beyond that normally expected, reflect great credit on themselves and on the Army Air Forces of the United States." The oak leaf cluster to the DFC was awarded Sergeant Gillespie for substantially the same missions over a different period of time, as was the Air Medal with its three clusters.
