AYERS Toccoa Record Thursday, August 7, 1975 Dr. Clarence Landers Ayers, who delivered more than 5000 babies in Stephens County, will be buried today following services at 2 p.m. Dr. Ayers was 98 years old when he died Tuesday afternoon in Stephens County Memorial Hospital. He had been ill for several months. Until his recent illness, Dr. Ayers had been active locally including frequent visits about town. He voted in last fall's primaries and general election. Funeral service will be from the First Baptist Church with Rev. Kelly Barnes, Rev. Robert Burks and Rev. Dean Head officiating. Entombment will be in the family mausoleum at Toccoa Cemetery with Acree-Davis Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. today. The body, now at the funeral home, will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. to lie in state until the funeral hour. Pallbearers will be Jess Hayes, Francis Crowe, Miles Davis, Jim Andrews, Jake Mitchell, Carl McCurry, Jack McNeely and Leon Moore. The honorary escort will be members of the Toccoa Kiwanis Club, members of the Ninth District Medical Association, the administrative board and the nursing staff of Stephens County Hospital. The son of the late Sanford Marion and Emma Williford Ayers, he was born Jan. 9, 1877, in Carnesville. He received his early education in the Carnesville Grammar School and Hartwell High School. Dr. Ayers was graduated from the Emory University Medical School and later studied at Mayo Clinic. He later received a special course in microscopic medicine in New York. Dr. Ayers had practiced medicine for 72 years and was actively engaged in his practice until his last illness. He was a past president of the Georgia Medical Association and the Ninth District Medical Association. Dr. Ayers was selected as Georgia Doctor of the Year in 1955. During his years of practice, Dr. Ayers had delivered over five thousand babies. He practiced medicine at the old Toccoa Orphanage for some 25 years without compensation. Dr. Ayers was a Veteran of World War I, having served in the Medical Corps as a lieutenant. He was a charter member and past president of the Toccoa Kiwanis Club. He served as chairman of the Toccoa Public School Board of Education for some 15 years. He also served as the Selective Service Board during World War II. Dr. Ayers was instrumental in Toccoa and Stephens County getting its first hospital and served on the board of trustees of Stephens County hospital for a number of years. Dr. Ayers entered politics at the age of 77 and served as state senator from the 31st District for two years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Toccoa, the Yaarah Shrine Club and Toccoa Masonic Lodge 309. Dr. Ayers was selected as "Man of the Year" by The Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce in 1949. His wife, Mrs. Helen Edwards Ayers, died in 1968. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mary Helen Ayers McGee and Mrs. Margaret Ayers Brown, both of Toccoa; two sons, Bill Ayers of Toccoa and Coach Howard (Doc) Ayers of Athens; one brother, Sanford Ayers of Carnesville; one sister, Miss Undine Ayers of Carnesville, five grandchildren and one great-grandson.
