The short telegram bringing the sad message contained no details It simply stated that Steve came to his death from a crushed head and neck. Steve had been in Italy for more than 2 years. He went over in July of 1944 and had been in Italy most of this time. He was in the Clerical Department of the army and remained rather stationery. He was living at Caserta where he had worked for several months. Recently his work was moved to Naples, but he continued to live at Caserta which is only 20 miles from Naples. Steve was born Aug. 5, 1912, a son of Mr. & Mrs. Reed Burton of Canon. He grew up in Canon and attended school there. He graduated Hartwell High School and attended Georgia Tech for 2 years. He entered the service on April 1, 1942. He had been in the Clerical Department since he entered, spending several months at Duke University. Before entering the service, he was for several years with North Georgia Processing Company in Toccoa, where he was regarded as a very valuable employee. He is survived by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Reed Burton of Canon; and a brother, Jack Burton of Atlanta. Additional Comments: Held rank of Captain in the U. S.
