Franklin County citizens were shocked Monday upon receiving word of the sudden 
death of their distinguished county citizen, Editor RUSH BURTON, of the 
Lavonia Times, who succumbed to a heart attack at Hot Springs, Arkansas, where 
he had been undergoing treatment for the past several weeks.
    Mr. Burton, one of the leading citizens of Northeast Georgia, was thought 
to be recuperating satisfactorily at the health resort where he had been since 
November 10th, and appeared in good spirits when he called is wife from Hot 
Springs only last Saturday night.  News of his sudden and unexpected passing 
has cast a shadow of sorrow over this entire section and brings sorrow to 
countless friends in this and other states where he was well known.
    Born and reared in Franklin County, Mr. Burton, who was 67 years of age, 
had been identified with the progress of Lavonia and community, county and 
State for many years.  He had served as Editor and Publisher of the Lavonia 
Times since 1906, and was widely known as an able and fearless champion of 
civic and religious progress.
    Mr. Burton also served as Representative from Franklin County in the 
General Assembly of Georgia for two successive terms.
    He was a member of the Board of Managers of the Georgia Press Association, 
a post which he filled with distinction and ability, and had also served in 
numerous positions of trust and responsibility during his long and active 
career.
    He received his education in the schools of Franklin county and was a 
graduate of Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn.  He was widely known among all 
the traveling men, having operated The Lavonia Hotel for several years.  
During his early years he taught school for a time.
    A lifelong member of the Methodist Church, he was active in various phases 
of the church and Sunday school work.  He had filled practically every office 
in the work of his church, and has served as Chairman of the Board of Stewards 
for many years.  He was widely known as a Bible student, and has served as 
teacher of the Men's Bible Class of his church for many years.
    Mr. Burton was a friend to education, being Chairman of the Local School 
Board, and was deeply concerned about boys and girls getting an education.
    In addition to his widow, Mrs. Leone Tucker Burton, Mr. Burton is survived 
by three daughters, Mrs. J. R. Rogers of Lavonia, Mrs. Donald Wilder of 
Atlanta, and Mrs. Harry Underwood of Springfield, Ohio; two brothers, J. H. 
Burton of Lavonia and T. R. Burton of Canon also survive.
    Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the 
Lavonia Methodist Church conducted by Rev. A. T. Hind, Re. J. R. Phillips, 
Jr., and Rev. R. S. Monk
