James was the son of the late Asa Milton Gillespie and Mrs. Pammie Coker Gillespie, who survives him. He was 28 years old. After graduating from high school at Carnesville in 1933, he attended Abraham Baldwin College at Tifton and later the University of Georgia in Athens. Throughout his school life he was outstanding in athletics being a star basketball player. While at the University, he was rated as one of their best players. Since 1937 he was connected with the Agricultural Adjustment Administration beginning as a County surveyor and advancing to State Performance Chief, with offices in Athens. He was married in April 1944, to Miss Hazel Walton of Newnan. He enlisted in the Seabees on October 21, 1943 as a Carpenter Mate Second Class. He took boot training and advanced training at Camp Peary, VA and since that time has served in the Pacific. James was a young man who possessed many admirable traits of character. Modest and kind, he was always considerate of his family and friends. He was an ardent worker in any cause which he undertook and was loyal to that which he knew to be right. In his work, which carried him throughout the state, he endeared himself to a host of friends and will long be remembered by them. Rev. D. L. Hagood of Buford, assisted by Rev. Harvey A. King, conducted the impressive memorial rites. The choir composed by Mesdames R. L. Howe, P. B. Little, H. G. Wansley, Miss Martha Little, Messrs. J. W. South, Clyde Sullivan, and R. F. Jones and, “Sweet Peace, the Gift of God’s Love”, and “Lead Me Gently Home, Father”. Miss Martha Little sang “Sunrise Tomorrow” as a solo. The American Legion of Franklin County attended as a body. Surviving are his wife and son, James Adrian Gillespie, Jr., of Newnan, GA; his mother, Mrs. Pammie Gillespie; 4 brothers, Leland M. Gillespie of Carnesville, SSgt. Aubrey W. Gillespie in England, Sgt. William H. Gillespie, somewhere overseas, Edwin P. Gillespie of Dublin; 2 sisters, Mrs. Joe Stamps of Gadsden, AL and Lt. Anne Gillespie Barfield of Martinsburg, WVA.
