Hayes, 79, died at his residence here Sunday night after a brief illness. He had been a prominent music leader and church revivalist of northeast Georgia for the past 50 years and otherwise active in church affairs. He was a Mason and also a member of Cross Roads Baptist church. In 1883 he was married to Miss Bartow Martin, daughter of Rev. John W. Martin, a prominent minister of Oglethorpe county. He is survived by his widow and one son, Garland C. Hayes, lawyer and court reporter of the northern circuit; three brothers, John H. Hayes, of Cornelia; Jasper W. and Terrell Hayes, of Toccoa. Funeral services were conducted at Carnesville Cross Roads Baptist church Monday afternoon by Rev. J. R. Lancaster, pastor, and Dr. Pope Duncan, of Royston.
