Mitchell of Lavonia passed away peacefully to her reward on Saturday, September 7th at 8 pm. Mrs. Mitchell suffered a light stroke Friday morning previous. There were recurring strokes during Friday and Saturday, and the one Saturday night carried her quietly away. Funeral services for Mrs. Mitchell were conducted from Lavonia First Baptist Church on Monday, September 9th at 11 am. Rev. Monk, Rev. Hind and Dr. A. T. Cline officiated Burial was in Lavonia City Cemetery. Weldon Funeral Home was in charge. Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her husband to whom she was married 55 years ago; a son, J. H. Mitchell of Athens, GA and the following daughters, Mrs. Gordon Walters of Washington, DC, Mrs. Charles B. Newton of Buchanan, GA, Mrs. Hugh Beasley of Greenwood, SC and Mrs. W. F. Bullard of Lavonia; Mrs. Thelma Mitchell, a daughter in law, survives, together with the following grandchildren, Jim, Martha and John Beasley of Greenwood, SC, Johnnie and Ernest Mitchell of Athens, Mrs. T. H. McCroy, and 1 great grandson, Tom McCroy, Jr. and Miss Ruth Mitchell of Columbia, SC Mrs. Mitchell was born in Franklin county on January 12, 1876. Her maiden name was Martha Emma Ford. She was reared a few miles north of Lavonia and was married to Mr. John W. Mitchell in 1891. Mr. & Mrs. Mitchell had lived in Lavonia for 48 years. In hr death a fine character has passed to a rich reward. Mrs. Mitchell had been a member of the Baptist Church for many years. She was a regular attendant and was active in all phases of church work. She was a grandmother and wife and as fine a neighbor as anyone ever had. Her life was lived in a very quiet way and he was loved and appreciated more by the close circle of friends who knew her best.
