Parten, 80, of the Sandy Cross community died at 6:20 p.m. Friday at Cobb Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Madison County, a son of the late Benjamin and Jane Dove Parten, and spent most of his life in the Sand Cross section. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Pennington Chapel Methodist Church near Royston. Survivors; his widow, Mrs. Tersie Phillips Parten of the home; three sons, George, Bill and Travis Parten, all of Royston; six daughters, Mrs. Jewell Sorrells, Mrs. Arthur Haley, Mrs. Lee Patterson, all of Royston; Misses Carmel, Madge and Montene Parten, all of the home; one brother, Obe D. Parten of Royston; one sister, Mrs. Claude Phillips of Royston; 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren. Two daughters, Mrs. Hubert Phillips and Mrs. Robert Brooks, preceded him to the grave. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Pennington Chapel Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles Johnson, the Rev. Dean Milford and the Rev. Spence Phillips officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbears: Jimmy Parten, Vernon Sorrells, Eugen and James B. Phillips, John and Thomas Parten. Pruitte Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
