Born in Stewartsville, Mo., on August 4, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Guy E. and Mabel Beeching Barnts. She attended business college before marriage and worked as a secretary to an attorney. After marriage, she became a homemaker. She moved to Georgia from Washington, D.C., at her husband’s second retirement. She joined the Montier, Mo., Methodist Church at an early age and never moved her membership, but attended her husband’s church, Zidon Baptist. In recent years she served on the Board of Directors of the Sandy Cross Community Center. Immediately following World War II, she accompanied her husband on military and diplomatic missions in Europe and South East Asia. Survivors include her husband, retired Army Brigadier General Eugene Phillips; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E.B. and Monica Lombard Phillips, Fairfax, Va.; three grandchildren, Jonathan Eugene Phillips, Drew Barnts Phillips, and Alli Marie Phillips; brother, Levi Clifford Barnts, Bois D’Act, Mo.; and sister, Wanda Williams, Springfield, Mo. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 15, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home with the Revs. Andy Bond and Jim McCullough officiating. Burial was in the Zidon Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers were Paul Bond, Thomas Crowe, Morris Phillips, Stanley Phillips, Lee Strickland, and Clayton Thomas.
