Born in Royston, he was the son of the late Denver and Mattie Porterfield. He was a loving husband and father who appreciated every day, according to loved ones. He was a member of the Evangelical Methodist Church and a member of the Royston Masonic Lodge. He had an interest in law enforcement, beginning at an early age, and encountered his first experience while employed as a radio dispatcher for the Royston Police Department. He later served the citizens of Royston as a police officer and as an emergency medical technician. Mr. Porterfield then joined the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department as a road deputy. Later, while serving 22 years within the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, he advanced to the position of sergeant, where the main emphasis of his work was with the drug and vice unit. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Sexton Porterfield; sons, Denver Porterfield and Dallas Porterfield; sister and brother-in-law, Stephanie and Dwain Brown; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Buddy and Irene Sexton; sisters- in-law and brothers-in-law, Marie and Mike Fowler, Patricia and Morris Fortson; and many other lives that he had touched. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 28, at the Evangelical Methodist Church with the Revs. Greg Jordan and Tim Peek officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jerry Stewart, Joe Williams, Frank Smith, Tim Parker, Bob Hollingsworth, Paul Brown, Fred Pulliam, and Terry Walls. Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, was in charge of arrangements.
