B. Purcell at her home in Carnesville on Friday. May 25, 1945, at 2:20 o'clock. Mrs. Purcell had been very ill for several days. She did not respond to treatment and those around her had known for some days that her earthly career was nearing its end. She was 82 years old. Funeral services were conducted from Cross Roads Bapt. Church on Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. The Rev. D. C. Williams, pastor, was in charge, assisted by Rev. Mr. King of the Carnesville Methodist Charge. A great concourse of friends were out to pay their tribute to the memory of the one they loved. Pallbearers were: P. B. Little, Bob Howe, M. T. Whitlow, C. R. Hall, H. N. Little and G. R. Harrison. Honorary escort included: G. C. Wilder, T. W. Andrews, T. A. Skelton, Grady Sanders, Paul S. Adair, C. D. McEntire, Ed McEntire, Dr. C. D. Turner and Rush Burton. Mrs. Purcell is survived by 11 children: Mrs. George S. Wright, Dalton; Mrs. H. J. Harrison, Gainesville, Mrs. T. G. (Etta) Hall, Carnesville; Mrs. Jack (Retha) Smith, Asheville, NC; Mrs. Carl Barrett of Hammond, LA; Miss Ada Purcell, Carnesville; Mrs. P. M. Stovall, Winder; E. W. Purcell, Beaumont, TX; E. E. Purcell, Lavonia; Parker Purcell, Carnesville; and B. C. Purcell, Hammond, LA. 4 granddaughters: Mrs. W. L. (Lucy Ruth) Manton, Dalton; Mrs. Rufus H. Alldredge, Atlantic City, NJ; Miss Doris Purcell, Carnesville; and Miss Lola Sue Purcell of Hammond, LA. Survived by 1 sister: Mrs. E. V. (Nora Belle) Purcell, Mize; and 1 brother: Benjamin H. Dickson of Carnesville. Mrs. Purcell was born in Franklin County on August 25, 1862, her maiden name being Mary Hepsie Dickson. She attended schools in her neighborhood and lived with her family till January 29, 1882, when she married Elisha Beauregard Purcell. The lived happily together till the death of Mr. Purcell on January 7, 1832. Many years ago the family moved from their home in Flintsville district to Carnesville, They operated a hotel for a time and also operated the Carnesville Herald. Following Mr. Purcell's death, the paper was sold and the hotel was discontinued. Throughout her life, she had been very active. Even after age crept upon her she continued bright in mind and active in body. She loved her family and her friends. Early in life Mrs. Purcell joined the Baptist Church, moving her membership to Cross Roads when the family moved to Carnesville. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. B. D.
