A son of the late Columbus C. and Lou Higgins Purcell, he was born Dec. 13, 1879, at Carnesville, and was a lifelong resident of the Red Hill Community with the exception of two years spent at Wrens. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Surviving are 4 daughters, Mrs. D. T. Sanders, and Mrs. Johnny LeCroy of Toccoa, Mrs. W. A. Cabe of Carnesville, and Mrs. C. E. Echols of Marietta; 2 sons, W. Charlie Purcell and Norman Purcell of Toccoa; 2 sisters, Mrs. Will Davis of Calhoun, GA and Mrs. Robert South of Atlanta; 1 brothers, Dwayne Purcell of Carnesville; 14 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday from Allen’s Methodist Church near Red Hill with Rev. Garnet Wilson and Rev. Harold Parker officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Charlie Dilworth, Lee Cash, Nat Crump, Cleo South, Quince Fredericks, and Paul Bentley.
