First Class Joseph W. Solcum was held at Middle River church Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, May 30th. Pfc. Solcum was killed April 23rd in combat action in North Africa. He is survived by his father, Mr. Berry W. Slocum and the following brothers and sisters: Johnnie, Francis, Cornelia, Jr. Solcum, of Red Hill; Mrs. G.C. Hart; Pvt. Jewel Slocum of Fort Jackson; Hoyt Slocum of Atlanta; Mrs. Horace Dove of Middle River; Mrs. Ralph and Farris Slocum of Lavonia; Mrs. Edd Slater of Ashland. Rev. Spence Phillips, of Sandy Cross; Rev. Garnet Wilson of Red Hill, Rev. W. Clark Ables, of Greenville, S.C.; were in charge of the service.
