John M & Nancy Suttles Smith, was born in Franklin County, GA. Joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in September, 1826. Was licensed to preach Nov 12, 1831 by W. J. Parks, presiding Elder. Was in the Ga. Conference and was an itinerant preacher. Went to Fla. as a missionary and did much good in that State, where he lived all his life. Was a noted preacher. After his fathers death he came to GA to the sale of his property, on Friday May 13, 1863, wand was to have preached the funeral of J. B. Holbrtook on Sunday. He was taken sick with a congestive chill on Friday evening and died the next day, May 14, 1863. Rev. J. M. Payne preached his funeral at Mt. Gillead Church, on Sunday. Funeral for Mr. Holbrook preached the next Sunday. Neither Mrs. Smith nor the children were present at his death. His departure from this life was our loss of a great and good man. He was married five times. His 1st wife Miss Martha Smith, the had two children. They both preceded her to the grave. She died Nov. 7, 1838. 2nd wife Miss Davian A Sheeba. They married 15 June 1840 aand had three sons. Payton P. Smith, her eldest son, was born in Marietta,GA 4 Nov 1845 and was a Confederate Soldier. Peyton Smith's 4th wife was Lucy Ann Donika and she was a widow at the time. .
