BACKGROUND: Church records in the possession of Harold Steppe indicates that Thomas Darter started Darter Chapel on the site in 1835 and church moved to the Birmingham Community about 1872. CONTRIBUTOR: Paul Linton Hayes and Gloria Wingate Hayes, Inventory made 12-23-81. Paul is a descendant of Jacob and Mary Hook buried here. Group I: In memory of Mrs. M.F. HOOK beloved of Dr. J.C.P. HOOK who died 25th March 1858, age 29 years 10 months. In memory of Dr. J.C.P. HOOK was born March 13, 1820, and departed this life September 5, 1871, aged 52 years 5 months 22 Days. "Meet me in Heaven." MCD, July 7, ? Marker embedded in cedar tree. J.J. HOOK infant son of G.M. and G.A. HOOK who died 8-1-1857, 9 months 6 Days. (Probable son of Golson Miller Hook and Gabriella Anglin, married 1-27-1856. In memory of Jacob HOOK in 80th year, May 9, 1855, formerly of Orangeburg District So. CA., but for the last 6 years a resident of this county and state. "I would not live always." Job In memory of Mary HOOK who died April 11, 1868, age 78 years. "Blessed are the dead who died in the Lord." There are many obvious grave sites marked with a head stone, but no incriptions. Also there are two large graves marked with brick walls about 4 inches high with no headstones or inscriptions. GROUP II: W.P. NEESE, 10-1-1846 11-16-1908 Lena May daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Neese, May 7, 1893 February 16, 1900 Authur B. son of Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Griffin, November 26, 1880 June 8, 1893 Jonathan PRUITT, January 3, 1839 January 22, 1891 Margaret E. Thaxton PRUITT, March 1848 October 1924 (This marker was placed in Fall 1981.) GROUP III: Jeremiah MAXWELL, born November 10, 1816 Died December 7, 1863 Dicy Jane MAXWELL, December 22, 1848 June 6, 1858 NOTES: There are only about thirty graves with identifiable markers. Surnames are: Hook, Pruett, Maxwell, Neese and Rampley. Most are only marked with simple field stones. This cemetery was originally donated by the Hook family when Jacob Hook died in 1855. The current Birmingham United Methodist Church moved to the current location near the intersection of Birmingham Highway and Birmingham Road in 1871. The original church (located two miles south of the current church) was known as Pleasant Hill, Milton Chapel and Darter Chapel.
