The following is from my  October 2004 monthly historical column in Atlanta Intown and Atlanta Buckhead. The complete article is on Castleberry Hill neighborhood in  downtown Atlanta, Fulton County.

 


Being a railroad center, the Federal forces destroyed most of
the area during the Civil War including the old Methodist
Episcopal Evans Chapel, built in 1851, by Rev. J. C. Oliver
at a cost of $1,800, on the north side of Nelson Street west
of Mangum. In 1866, the Methodist built a new structure on
the corner of Chapel (called Racetrack) and Stonewall
streets. Members stayed at the site until 1888, when they
erected a $12,000 church with a seating capacity of 450 at
the junction of Walker and Nelson streets.
