H. Edwards came to the office of the Dalton Times this week with several pieces of beautiful specimens of gold ore from the Cartecay Mines near Ellijay, in Gilmer County. The mines are said to be rich with ore. Mr. Edwards and a partner will work them. Sun April 22, 1860 the Atlanta City Council voted on Monday to subscribe $300,000 worth of stock in the GA Airline RR Co. to be used for road construction. Council also passed, in protection of merchants, an ordinance forbidding any slave or free negro to sell chickens, eggs, fish or similar articles within the city except when going about the buisness of their owner or guardian. Penalty for violation is 39 lashes. May 27, 1860 Bainbridge Georgian (Thursday) has learned on good authority that the proposition to build the telegraph line from Bainbridge to the Chattahooche Telegraph Office on reasonable terms, has been made and more than 1/3 of the stock taken in one day. Operators of land lotteries in Georgia are preparing to close their buisiness Thursday. A law passed by Legislature in 1858 ends lotteries on June 1, 1860. Sun June 16, 1861 Cobb Organizing Legion Mr. Thomas R. Cobb is making up a legion in georgia to be called Cobb's Legion, composed of infantry, calvary and artillery and to be led by former US Army officers. Oct. 6, 1861 Salt Shortage Worries the South Richmond, Virginia - Shortage of salt is beginning to plague the Confederacy.
