Charlie Simpson, a young man whom the police call a Peters street rounder, appeared in court this morning to answer to the charge of being drunk one solid year. Officer Ozburn, who made the arrest, stated that Simpson had not worked in a year, but was a hanger-on at saloons on Peters street. The direct cause of his arrest, however was the taking of 85 cents from the pocket of John Parks, an old white man with whom he had been drinking during the day. Simpson was given a fine of $15.75 or thirty days in the stockade. He informed the recorder that he thought he would be able to pay the fine this afternoon or tomorrow. ------------------------------------------------------------ PAGE 6 THREE GIRLS FOR CHARITY MRS. BLAKE WILL ASK RECORDER BROYLES TO PLACE HER CHILDREN IN CHARITABLE HOME. A hard luck story that tells of hard luck pure and simple, brought on by too much whisky and too much love for a worthless man, is the one that has been told to Chief Ball by Mrs. Mary Blake, wife of Harry Blake, who applied at police headquarters yesterday afternoon for a place to stay with her three children. Mrs. Blake has been married about nine years, and has three girls, one seven, one six, and the other five years old. Her husband, she says, has been a drunkard for years, and was before Judge Broyles in the recorder's court last week, having been arrested on complaint of his wife. At that time he promised to go to work, behave himself and support his family. With this understanding the case was left open against Blake, and he was not fined. As soon as he left headquarters Blake left for Birmingham, and since going there his wife has not heard from him, and he has not sent her any money for the support of herself or the children. Mrs. Blake waited to hear from her recreant spouse, but as no word has received from him, she was compelled to apply to Chief Ball for aid. All of last night she remained in the women's ward in the care of Matron Bohnefeld, and this afternoon she will go before Recorder Broyles and ask that her three girls be committed to the care of some charitable institution until such time as she, through working, may be able to provide for them. It is a probable this course will be taken by the recorder. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
