News Items from the Atlanta Journal 19 Oct 1901 Fulton Co, GA THE ATLANTA JOURNAL SATURDAY EVENING OCTOBER 19, 1901 Page 5 THE ATLANTA CAMP, 159, UNITED CONFEDERATE VETERANS TO HOLD MEMORIAL SERVICES IN HONOR OF VETERANS The Atlanta camp, 159, United Confederate Veterans, will hold a memorial service tomorrow evening at 7:30 o'clock at the First Methodist church. The service will be in memory of 22 of its deceased members who have died during the last year. They are a follows: Jerry Lynch, Company B, Fourth Alabama and C. S. navy; Isaac Guthman, provost marshal in Army of Tennessee; George M. Hanvey, major First Georgia and Twelfth Georgia battalion; J. Van Hold Nash, aid to General Fitzhugh Lee; Robert Dougherty, Company K, Third Georgia infantry; H. W. Broxton, company A, Atlanta Artisan battalion; John C. Campbell, Company B, Hampton's cavalry legion; Edward Cox, company __; first Georgia cavalry; J. J. Round, sergeant in Indian department; W. P. Lother, company C, Fourth Georgia infantry; J. D. Garrison, Company I, Thirty-first Georgia infantry; J. J. Griffin, Company B, Eight Georgia infantry; Francis Fontaine, company I, Third Georgia cavalry; S. T. Johns, company K, Fifth Georgia infantry; Frank N. Graves, company F, Sixty-first Georgia infantry; Joel Nicholas, Company K, Forty-second Georgia infantry; Alexander M. Wallace, colonel Thirty-sixth Georgia infantry; S. H. Askew, Sixty-second Alabama infantry; William P. Mitchell, company G. Cobb's Legion cavalry; R. W. Whisenant, Company A. Second Alabama cavalry; R. S. McFarlin, adjutant Third Alabama infantry; S. B. Spencer, major Twentieth Georgia cavalry. An interesting program consisting of music and addresses has been arranged for the occasion. The speakers will be commander C. S. Arnall, Colonel A. J. McBride and Mr. F. H. Richardson, of The Journal. The full program is as follows: organ voluntary. Entrance Confederate veterans. Anthem. Prayer and reading scriptures - Rev. C. W. Byrd. Hymn: "Am I a Soldier of the Cross" - Choir. Roll call - Adjutant W. H. Harrison. Hymn: "When the Roll is Called up Yonder" - Choir. Address - Commander C. S. Arnall. Hymn: "How Firm a Foundation" - choir. Address - Co. A. J. McBride. Hymn: "God be With You" - Choir. Benediction - Chaplain Rev. T. P. Cleveland. Organ postlude. The choir will be composed of Miss Clemintine MacGregor, organist and director; Miss Grace Lee Brown, soprano' Mrs. Samuel M. Burbank, contralto; Mr. W. P Hunter, bass; and Mr. John M. Cooper, tenor. ------------------------------------------------------------ Page 5 SPECIAL SERVICES FOR FIFTH REGIMENT. Chaplain Tullius C. Tupper Will Conduct Special Services at St. Phillip's. Religious services will be conducted especially for the Fifth regiment tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at St. Phillips church. The regiment has accepted the invitation of the chaplain of the regiment, Re. Tullius C. Tupper, who will conduct the services. Colonel Woodward, commanding the regiment, has issued an order for Companies A, K, L and M to report to Major J. Van Hold Nash, commanding the First battalion, on Trinity avenue, right resting on Pryor street, at 4 o'clock; Companies B, C and D to report to Major W. W. Barker, commanding the Third battalion, at the same time and place. The majors commanding the battalions will report to Colonel Woodward, at the corner of Trinity avenue and Pryor streets, at 4:15 o'clock. Staff dismounted will report to Colonel Woodward at same time and place. Uniform, blue blouse and trousers, white collar and cuffs, white gloves and cap. ------------------------------------------------------------ Page 5 YOUNG LADIES' BENEVOLENT SOCIETY HOLD ELECTION. The Young Ladies' Benevolent society at its annual meeting held several days ago elected the following officers for the ensuing year: Miss Gussie Weinberg, president; Miss Annie Schwartz, vice president; Miss Nannie Kahn, secretary, and Miss Annie Jacobs, treasurer. The society is one of the best known of the Jewish organizations in the city. Since its organization four years ago the members have brought it into much prominence by their works of charity and benevolence. Considerable money has been raised during that time for churches. ------------------------------------------------------------ Page 5 TO PREPARE MEMORIAL TO THE LATE S. B. SPENCER. In the superior court this morning Colonel John B. Goodwin moved that a committee be appointed to draft suitable resolutions on the death of the late Hon. Samuel B. Spencer, who was a member of the Atlanta bar. Judge J. H. Lumpkin appointed John B. Goodwin, Porter King, George Hillyer, Howard Van Epps and W. J. Spears on the committee. ------------------------------------------------------------ Page 5 J. M REYNOLDS DIES AT MACON HOSPITAL. (Special Dispatch to the Journal.) MACON, GA., Oct. 19. - Mr. J. M. Reynolds, a prominent citizen died yesterday morning at the city hospital, after an illness of several weeks. He resided at 717 Cherry street. Mr. Reynolds was fifty-five years of age and leaves a wife, four daughters and two sons. The funeral will occur this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Interment will be in Rose Hill cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------ Page 5 SILVERS - The funeral of Mrs. A. Silvers, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Card, Mr. and Mrs., J. B. Young, Mr. and Mrs. John McMillian, and Misses Caro.
