FULTON COUNTY, GA -NEWSPAPERS Mrs. Elizabeth Bearden 100th Birthday Sunday, July 12, 1908, The Atlanta Constitution Toccoa Woman Celebrates Her 100th Anniversary Nearly 400 Descendants -- Toccoa, Ga., July 11; Mrs. Elizabeth Bearden of Oakway, celebrated her one-hundredth birthday at the home of her son, J. W. Bearden, last Sunday. Mrs. Bearden has had a most remarkable career. Born in Virginia in 1808, Mrs. Bearden can distinctly remember the British and Americans fighting on Lake Erie, as her father moved to the shores of Lake Erie when she was but two years of age. Her father being killed in the battle, her mother married again and they again moved to the then frontier state of Mississippi. There Mrs. Bearden grew up a typical frontier girl, braving all dangers from Indians to wild animals. At the age of nineteen she married Howard Taliferro, who was a cousin to the famous Colonel Bowie. When Texas began the war of freedom the martial spirits of Taliaferro could not be restrained, and leaving his wife and children behind, he went forth to the war. After distinguishing himself greatly, being in the party that captured Santa Anna, he brought his family to Texas and died there eight years later. Mrs. Taliferro two years later married J. W. Bearden, a Georgian, who had just come from his native state. They lived quietly on Bearden's plantation until the civil war broke out. Bearden then brought his family to Georgia, leaving them to the care of his father, while he went to fight for the Southland. After reconstruction he settled down at Oakway and died there in 1874. Since that time Mrs. Bearden has been living with her youngest son, J. W. Bearden. Mrs. Bearden is practically of sound health, her only physical falling being failing eyesight. From her two marriages sprang thirteen children, all of whom grew up. Mrs. Bearden has had 361? descendants, of whom 321 are living. =================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
