W.L. Peel Will Celebrate 75th Birthday Colonel W.L. Peel will celebrate his 75th birthday today, and friends have planned a brilliant party at the Piedmont Driving club tonight. His three daughters, Mrs. William H. Kiser and Mrs. Phinizy Calhoun, of Atlanta, and Mrs. Stephen A. Watts, of Charlottesville, Va., will be hostesses. About 100 invitations have been issued. Colonel Peel was born in Webster county, Georgia, the son of James Gamble Peel and Mrs. Elizabeth Stapleton Peel. In 1874 he was married to Miss Lucy Cook, daughter of General Phil Cook. She died less than two years ago. Colonel Peel served on the staffs of Governors Joe Terrell and Hoke Smith. He was largely responsible for bringing grand opera to Atlanta, for building the present city auditorium and the city market. For many years he was one of Atlanta’s leading bankers.
