G. Shearer, the well-known traveling man, who left his wife and home about six months ago in company with a Mrs. Cauble. The news was brought by Mrs. J. W. Hirschfield, of 48 Garnett street, who says that she talked in New York with a man who saw Shearer fall dead at a table in a hotel in Florence, and who, according to Mrs. Hirschfield's statement, assisted in attending to the arrangements for the burial of the man. Mrs. Hirschfield was present in New York at the festivitites incident to the announcement of the engagement of her nephew, B. F. Weinberg, and she met while there a Mr. and Mrs. Glauber, who had just returned from Italy. She says that Mr. Glauber, hearing that she was from Atlanta, asked her if she had known a man named C. G. Shearer, and that when she replied that she did, he told her the story of Shearer's death. Glauber said that he met Shearer in Florence in company with a woman who was introduced as his wife; that Shearer told him his name and said that he lived in Atlanta. One night, Mr. Glauber said, Shearer and the woman were seated at a table in one of the hotels, Shearer suddenly dropped dead, and the woman, presumably she with whom he left Atlanta, went to him, took his rings, when through his pockets and removed what money and papers she found. As she was supposed to be his wife, arrangements were made for his burial in Florence, no questions being asked. Mrs. Shearer, who lives at 530 Washington street, has received no information concerning his death, but says she has not heard directly from him since he left, in December. He was subject to spells of weakness, Mrs. Shearer said, and had already suffered one paralytic stroke, which lends credibility to the story.
