N. C. BARNETT IS DEAD Sunday afternoon last, in the city of Atlanta, the spirit of Hon. Nathan Crawford Barnett winged its flight from earth to that better land beyond the stars. Aged 88 years. Col. Barnett was first elected Secretary of State in 1843, and, with the exception of two terms, held the position until the reconstruction period of ‘69. In 1873 he was again chosen Secretary of State and held the office to the day of his death. He was honest and upright, being true to every trust. “He was the very soul of honor and every inch a man.” Georgia mourns the loss of her faithful son. His remains were buried at Milledgeville by his request the day before he died. Hon. Philip Cook, of Americus, has been appointed to fill the vacancy until the election in October.
