Knight He Was Run Over While Riding a Bicycle on Luckie Street Motorman Not To Blame Mrs. Knight Says She Warned Her Husband of Trouble Seems He Lost Control Of His Wheel Was Taken to the Grady Hospital, Where He Died Shortly After The Accident Yesterday morning David T. Knight, a grocery merchant at No. 748 Marietta street, was run over by a trolley car while he was riding a bicycle and received injuries from which he died at the Grady hospital a short while after the accident. Knight left his store on his wheel to come into the city and rode down Marietta street as far as Cone. He rode along Cone street to Luckie. When he reached Luckie street he turned the corner. Trolley car No. 115 of the West Peachtree line was on Luckie street going westward and approaching Knight. The car struck the bicycle, throwing the rider under the fender, where he was held and dragged several feet. The injured man was taken to the Grady hospital, where he died shortly afterwards. Motorman Fincher, on car No. 115, says he did his best to prevent the accident. He put on brakes and reversed his current when he saw that a collision was about to take place. The motorman stated after the accident that he saw the bicycle approaching and rang to warn him to get further from the tracks. "The rider seemed to lose control of his wheel," said the motorman, "and just as I approached him he let his wheel run right into the car. I regret the accident, but do not feel that I was in any way to blame." Mrs. Knight was notified of the accident and reached the hospital before her husband expired. She says she had a premonition that something was going to happen to her husband and she begged him not to leave the store on his wheel. When some one went to the store to inform her of what had occurred she said at once that she knew her presentiments had been realized. H. W. Ford, a friend of Knight, was near the scene of the accident and he remained with the injured man until the ambulance arrived. He said two or three physicians came up and looked at Knight, but, like the first two men who was the man that was robbed and beaten on the highway, they "passed by on the other side," saying it was no business of theirs to minister unto him. Knight was about twenty-five years of age. He recently married. He had been in the grocery business on Marietta street for several years and was regarded as a good citizen and a successful merchant. The Atlanta Constitution 20 Aug 1899 p 19 Motorman Not To Blame Case Dismissed Against Motorman on Trolley Car Which Killed David T. Knight Friday A case was made against R. K. Fincher yesterday morning, the motorman who was in charge of the trolley car which killed David T. Knight Friday morning. The charge was reckless running of a street car in the city. The case was tried in the police court yesterday afternoon. The preponderance of the testimony showed that the car was not running over four miles an hour, when the law permits a speed of six miles an hour. The acting recorder, Alderman Day, dismissed the case.
