Mitchell, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Atlanta, died yesterday at 9:30 o'clock at his residence, 242 Ponce de Leon avenue. His death resulted from paralysis, with which he had been suffering for a long time. He was an invalid for many months, but bore his sufferings with the fortitude with which he had fought the battles of his life. He had reached the age of sixty-four years, and during the greater portion of his life had resided in this city. He is survived by his wife and seven children. His children are: Dr. Carleton Mitchell, of New Orleans; Guy Mitchell, of Atlanta; Watterly Mitchell, of St. Louis; Edward B. Mitchell, a second lieutenant in the United States army and now enroute to Philippines, Miss Mary F. Mitchell, Robert A. Mitchell and Miss Martha Mitchell, all of Atlanta. Funeral services over the body of Professor Mitchell will be conducted this morning at 11 o'clock at his residence, 242 Ponce de Leon avenue, and the interment will occur in Westview cemetery. The following gentlemen will act as pallbearers: Colonel J.O. Waddell, Captain L.E. O'Keefe, J.A. Barry, H.W. Dozier, F.W. Call and George N. Hurt. Professor Mitchell was born June 4, 1835, near Columbus, Ga., where he received his early education. He attended the old field school in the vicinity of Columbus but when the Georgia Military Institute was founded he was sent there by his parents and made a splendid record. He afterwards took a master's degree at Columbia, S.C. At the outbreak of the civil war, having had a military training, Professor Mitchell fell naturally in to the ranks of the confederate army and went to Virginia with that branch of the confederate force. While in the army he was noted for his skillful discharge of his duties and for his fidelity to his trust. He was rapidly promoted until he reached the rank of captain. General Early applied for Captain Mitchell to be detailed for the construction of breastworks and he gave considerable time to this duty. General Longstreet, when preparing his war papers, wrote to Professor Mitchell asking for his recollection of certain events of the great battle of Gettysburg, in which General Longstreet differed from northern historians. The memory of Professor Mitchell agreed with that of General Longstreet and the latter was made able to controvert the statements of erroneous writers. Professor Mitchell received two wounds at a battle on Round Top mountain during the battle of Gettysburg, but recovered from them and was with the army at the time of the surrender. He was for thirteen years, principal of one of Atlanta's public schools, but was compelled to give up his duties as a teacher due to his ill health. He spent his declining years at his home on Ponce de Leon avenue. He had a large number of friends throughout who loved him for his many excellent qualities. He was regarded as one of the foremost citizens of Atlanta and was a member of the board of deacons of the Central Presbyterian church, having filled that high and important office many years prior to his death. The members of the board of deacons will attend his funeral this morning in a body. Additional Comments: Transcriber's note: I'm not related to or researching the Mitchell family.
