The Georgia Enterprise, December 15, 1887
  The death of State School Commissioner, G. J. Orr, which occurred in Atlanta
Sunday, will be lamented all over the South. He was a good and noble man.

  State School Commissioner, Hon. G. J. Orr, died at his home in Atlanta Sunday
last. Aged about 68 years. Dr. Orr, was born in South Carolina in 1819, but has 
lived in Georgia since he was two years old. He graduated at Emory college in
1843, and since that time has held many positions. Hon. Orr held the position 
of State School Commissioner for nearly 16 years. He was a good man, a 
consistent Christian, being a life long member of the Presbyterian church. 
Death had no terrors for such a man as Hon. Gustavus J. Orr. May he sleep 
sweetly.
