Phelps Atlanta loses one of its best citizens. Mr. Phelps was born near Penfield, Greene county, May 22, 1845. When but a youth he joined the confederate army and fought through the war. After the war he returned to Georgia, and in 1872 married Mrs. Emma Leonard, of Talbott county. After engaging in business in various cities, he came to Atlanta about fifteen years ago. Mrs. Phelps was a sister of Mrs. John H. James. As bookkeeper in James's bank he was well known for a good many years. He was a fine, all around business man, and prospered at whatever he undertook. Two years ago he entered into partnership with Mr. E.F. Donehoo and engaged in the restaurant business. In this, as in everything else, he was prosperous. A few days ago he was taken ill, and Tuesday night, every unexpectedly, he passed away. The shock to his family and friends was great, and there were many expressions of sympathy and regret heard among his many friends yesterday, when the sad news of his death became public. Mr. Phelps was a half brother of Mr. J.H. Seals and Mr. W.B. Seals, of the Sunny South and Rev. Thomas Seals, of Thomaston. He was a member of the First Methodist church. The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Hopkins and Rev. Mr. Glenn, at the residence of Mr. John H. James, No. 212 West Peachtree street, at 9:30 o'clock today.
