Oct 5, 1907 DEATH TAKES W. C. SHEARER Had Just Returned From a Meeting of the Odd Fellows. After attending a meeting of the Odd Fellows, W. C. Shearer returned to his home No. 442 Luckie street, last night at 9:30 o'clock, and one hour later died from a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Shearer was for a number of years connected with the city waterworks department in the capacity of engineer. For the last few years of his life, however, he lived in retirement. He leaves a wife, five boys, and three girls. Funeral services will be announced later. Before the war between the states, Charley Shearer came to Atlanta. He was a trained machinist and one of the best equipped engineers in the country. For a long time he was connected with the Western and Atlantic railroad and during the time the late Captain Flynn was master mechanic he was among the directing workers in the state road machine shops. Full of life and energy he was always among those who worked in his own way for the advancement of the city. He was an active member of the old volunteer fire department, and was among the strong advocates of the water works when it's building was suggested forty years ago. He was a member of the first board of water works commissioners under the administration of Mayor Hammock. Mr. Shearer was a great secret order man and was probably connected with as many societies as any one in the city. He wasa leader in bringing about the organization of stationery engineers, and had no little to do in securing the enactment by the general council of an ordinance requiring stationary engineers to pass and examination before being allowed to work. He was a member of the pioneer society and of the old firemen's society, he was and Odd Fellow, a Pythian and a Mason File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/fulton/obits/s/shearer14401ob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
