M. Slaton Dies of Apoplexy Prominent Woman Taken Suddenly Ill While Visiting Friend Mrs. Mattie Jackson Slaton, wife of W. M. Slaton, former superintendent of the Atlanta public schools, died suddenly last night at 6:10 o'clock as the result of apoplexy while visiting a sick neighbor who lives next door to the Slaton home at 147 Myrtle street. At the time she became ill she had called to see her neighbor, after she had attended a meeting of the Missionary Circle of the First Methodist church, of which she had been a member for many years. Sunday she had entertained many friends in the home throughout the day and was considered in excellent health, having it was thought, completely recovered from a sickness incurred six months ago. Family Notified When Mrs. Slaton became ill members of the family were notified and she died in the presence of her husband and three sons, William F. Slaton, Jr., James Jackson Slaton and John M. Slaton Jr. The fourth child, Mrs. Edward G. Hitt, who resides in Chicago, was the only member of the immediate family not present at the time. Mrs. Slaton only last week returned from a visit to her daughter. She would have been 58 years old in February. Mrs. Slaton was born in Milledgeville, Ga., on February 26, 1863. She was the daughter of the late Chief Justice James Jackson, of the supreme court of Georgia. She was a niece and namesake of the late Mrs. John D. Grant. Surviving Mrs. Slaton are her husband and children; mother, Mrs. James Jackson, and sister, Mrs. Mary J. Davis, residing in New York, and the following relatives in Atlanta; Ex-Governor and Mrs. John M. Slaton, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Waldo, Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Atkinson, Mr. and Mrs. K. S. Blanchard, Mr and Mrs. William A. MacGregor and Miss Mattie Lee Slaton. Death a Shock An active member of the First Methodist church, Mrs. Slaton was known to hundreds of her friends and acquaintances as an active Christian worker and one of the most loved women in Atlanta. Always ready to extend a helping hand in time of trouble, when she died she was attempting to cheer a sick neighbor. She was always bright and cheerful in the sick room and her death comes as a distinct shock to her many friends and acquaintances throughout the south. Funeral arrangements had not been completed at a late hour last night and will be announced later. Mrs. Mattie Slaton At Rest in Oakland Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie Jackson Slaton, wife of former School Superintendent William M. Slaton, whose death Monday evening marked the passing of one of Atlanta's best known and most beloved women, were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the residence at 147 Myrtle street. Dr. James E. Dickey, assisted by Dr. James E. Harrell, officiating. The interment was in Oakland cemetery. The death of Mrs. Slaton, which occurred in her 58th years at the home of a sick neighbor, whom she was visiting, was the result of a sudden attack of apoplexy. Mrs. Slaton, who was born in Milledgeville, Ga., was the daughter of the late James Jackson, chief justice of the supreme court of Georgia, and was the niece of the Mrs. John D. Grant. She is survived by her husband, William M. Slaton; her sons, William M., Jr., James J. and John M. Slaton, Jr.; one daughter, Mrs. Edward C. Hitt of Chicago; her mother, Mrs. James Jackson; one sister, Mrs. Mary J. Davis, of New York. Among her Atlanta relatives were ex-Governor and Mrs. John M. Slaton, Mr. and Mrs. A. L.
