Mrs. Smith was one of four daughters of Thomas R.R. Cobb, the famous Georgia general, who was killed during the civil war while commanding a division of Georgia troops. On her mother’s side Mrs. Smith was a granddaughter of the late Judge Joseph Henry Lumpkin, the first chief justice of Georgia.
