He appears on the 1850 Gilmer County census as a merchant with wife and child. John married Mary Louise Bradley, daughter of Briant Brown and Malinda Eaton Bradley, of Pickens County, Georgia. John and Mary Cobb had 12 children. John Cobb appears on the 1860 census of Gilmer County. There is record of John P. Cobb in Company D., 16th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, State Guards, who enrolled at Ellijay on July 7, 1862. The 1864 census for re-organizing the Georgia Militia shows John Cobb exempt from service because he was a postmaster. He was post master again in Ellijay from November 1872 to July 1873. John Cobb was the Gilmer County Treasurer in 1866. He was a Baptist and a Mason. In 1875 & 1876 he represented Gilmer County in the Georgia legislature. In 1891 John and Mary Cobb moved to Texas with their younger children. He died 1899, she in 1912. John and Mary are buried in Bluff Dale, Erath County, Texas.
