Her Mother was Nancy Ann Greer b. abt. 1834 Georgia. Rebecca E. Martin is first found in the 1880 Census of Etowah Co., Alabama in the household of Thomas J. Harvy(sic) her husband, son of James E. and Lucinda (Downing) Harvey. Her age is given as 18 b. in Alabama. Her Father is shown as being born in SC and her mother in Alabama. In the 1870 Census for Etowah Co., AL, she is found in the household of her Grandmother, Rebecca Greer, a widow age 58 b.SC. Along with Rebecca is her Mother, Nancy Morton/Martin age 36 b. Georgia and uncles Freeman age 22 b. GA, Richard N. age 20 b. AL, W. M. age 17 b. AL and Washington A. age 15 b. AL. Checking the 1866 State Census for St. Clair Co., AL N. A. Martin age over 20 and a female under 10 can be found living either next to or with R. Greer age over 20 with 3 males age 10-20 living with her. about 6 households away is Miles Martin age over 20 with 2 females and 1 male all under 10 living with him. Suspect that he might be related to the husband of Nancy Ann (Greer) Martin/Morton. Going back to the 1860 Census for St. Clair Co., Alabama Rebecca Greer, a widow, age 48 b. SC a farmer with real estate valued at $3000 has the following members in her household: Nancy Ann age 22 b. SC Sarah E. age 18 b. GA John M. age 16 b. GA Newton F. age 11 b. GA Richard N.age 10 b. Greer bought a total of 80+ acres of land on the 1 April 1852 from the Huntsville, AL land office. This land was located in TWP 12 R 4 E in St. Clair Co., AL later Etowah Co., AL. Any help that you can give me with respect to these families would be greatly appreciated. This is my 88 year old Brother-in-law's ancestors and I am trying to locate his ancestors. ================ The only reason I am in the Greer surname is because I ran across a female who was listed as a Matron for a Georgia unit in the Cherokee War. It seems there may have been three women serving as Matrons One of them was a Rebecca Greer who served in Lindsay's GA Mtd Mil in the Cherokee War - the other two also served in this unit. I believe that person may be your Rebecca. There is an A. W. Greer who served in Derrick's Co. of Lindsay's GA Mtd Mil in the Cherokee War - this is probably Alexander W. Greer. The only other thing I can tell you is that Alexander W. Greer is shown on the 1840 Gilmer, GA census. Do you have any info on Rebecca serving in the Cherokee War?
