Information was provided by Lewis F. Starks. Children: 1.Starks, William Jefferson Born NC, August 26, 1838-- June 11, 1923. Died in Gilmer Cty. Buried New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. First married Nancy A. Unknown. One child, Laura C. Starks, born October 1863. Believe that Laura married Elisha T. Rittenhouse. William Jefferson Starks' 2nd marriage was to Matilda Elliott, daughter of Lakey Elliott, Jr. and Mary C. 'Polly' Griggs. Matilda "Tildy' applied for and received the pension due from her husband's service in the Civil War. He served with the Georgia State Line Troops. Co. H, 1st Reg., Gilmer Browns. Captured July 10, 1864 at a creek outside Atlanta that is variously listed as Nickajack Creek, Chattoochee Creek and various spellings of Chattahoochee. Released May 12, 1865 from Camp Douglas, Illinois. 2.Starks, John P. b. abt 1843 in NC. Died abt 1878 in Gilmer County. Supposed to be buried at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Headstone not yet found. Married Nancy E. Whisenant/Whisenhunt, daughter of George and Holly Hoppis Whisenant. One son, William Pinkney Starks, born December 10, 1868 in Gilmer County, Ga. Died March 13, 1957 in Whitfield County, Ga. Buried at Concord Baptist Church Cemetery in Whitfield County. John Starks was in the same unit as his brother William Jefferson and captured the same day. Both were transferred to Camp Douglas, Illinois where they managed to survive the harsh conditions. Also released on May 12, 1865. 3.Starks, Adaline b. abt 1845 in NC 4.Starks, Lydia A. b. abt 1846 in NC. Lydia suffered from Dropsy. Last records found are from 1880 and show her living with her brother, Lewis Starks. 5.Starks, Lewis F. b. NC, Oct. 14, 1848--d. May 11, 1931, Gilmer County. Buried New Hope Baptist church Cemetery. Married first, Nancy L. Whisenant, daughter of John Calloway Whisenant & Kemley Carter. Second marriage was to Mary Jane Sumner. Lewis is buried between Nancy L. and Mary Jane at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, Gilmer County, GA. Most if not all of the later Starks families in Gilmer County were descendants of Lewis Starks. 6.Starks, Sarah E. b. abt 1849 in Georgia. Married George W. Whisenant, son of George and Holly Hoppis Whisenant. 7. Starks,Catherine Louisa, b. abt 1853 in Georgia. daughter of Thomas Jefferson & Catherine Nelson Starks, married John R. Whisenant who was the son of John Calloway and Kemmley Carver Whisenant of Gilmer County. John R. Whisenant was born June 1856 in South Carolina and Louisa was born in June 1854 in Georgia. They had the following children: Laura C. Whisenant born Abt. 1877 Virgil Holman Whisenant (b. May 22, 1879--d. June 1948) Christopher C. Whisenant born May 1886.. Married Fannie Turner Robert C. Whisenant born October 31, 1889
