Originally there was a church in this community named Mount Nebo, which was active during the Civil War. Nothing remains on the site now except the cemetery, where a number of the community's earliest settlers are buried. Gates Chapel was established by some of the Mt.Nebo parishioners after the Methodist split into North and South. The first meetings were held in the home of the Pioneer Peter Austin Gates, for whom the church was named. The first church building was built in 1872 about a quarter of a mile from the Gates home, on land donated by Monroe Parks. It served as both a church and a schoolhouse for many years. This structure was later torn down. Construction on the present building was underway by Dec. 1919 and had been completed by 1922. The pulpit was built by John Henry Sumner, a local carpenter. In the late 1950's a student pastor named Glenn Youngblood came to the church and initiated changes which brought new life to the church. In 1982 an addition was built, which houses a fellowship hall and restrooms. Until about 12 years ago, the church was in a four church charge, which included Cochran UM. Now it is on a charge of two churches, along with Nine Mile UM, with services held every Sunday morning. Some of the preachers who have served at Gates Chapel include: Hughie Todd, Miller Michael, Michael Fryga, Henry Helton, Millard Smith, Claude Patterson, Glenn Youngblood, Royce Linton, Osa Patrick, George Dunbar, John Morris, Ray Earls, Y.A. Bailey, Fred Hall, Paul Bone, Michael Whittington, Oscar Poole, W.O. Dinkins, Calvin Ward, Claude Fouts, Phil Hoyt, Tom Smith, Clay Hall, Sharon Silvers and John Moeller. Gates Chapel is located 8.4 miles north of Ellijay off Hwy 52. Church services are held on Sunday mornings at 9:45. Sunday school begins at 10:45. Homecoming is traditionally the 2nd Sunday in August. Submitted by Anita Summers. Direction to Cemetery: From Ellijay, Gilmer Co. Georgia, take Ga. 52 (Chatsworth Hwy) west approximately four miles to Gates Chapel Road on the right. Travel approximately four miles to the church on the right. The cemetery is beside the church.
