Pleasant Baptist Church - Gilmer County, Georgia Survey conducted by Brad Wilson, Carrollton, Georgia - April 26, 2003 Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church (formerly Top of the Mountain Church) is located in Gilmer County, GA on Doublehead Gap Road. To get to it, take Hwy 53 east to Big Creek Road. Turn Left onto Big Creek Road, which will turn into Doublehead Gap Road. Mt. Pleasant is located on the left, across from the entrance to Rich Mountain WMA (Wildlife Management Area). The church is a small white building established in 1864. There is an outhouse out back, and it has the side entrance that was used in the 'old days' where the women would enter the church, while the men came in the front. Services are still held there on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month. If you go to visit the cemetery, bring insect repellent as there are always gnats and mosquitos in abundance as there is an outhouse behind the church. The cemetery is very old, and many markers are just weathered stones sunk into the ground. It appears that some people have been researching who is buried at these locations or are marking them based on information the family may have. This is most of the graves in the 'old section'. There are newer graves across the dirt road in front of the church leading into the Chattahoochee National Forest. Directly behind the church is the remnant of an old road, and the impressions from wagon tracks are still visable. Comments in brackets are those that I know full names to STOVER, Sam M. The dates are believed to be incorrect as 1860 census shows Amos still alive with Elizabeth and several children. He is the father of James Robert JOHNSON, James W. Pleasant Baptist Church.
