H. Hutchison, Editor Ellijay, Georgia March 5th 1896: A GOOD MAN GONE Uncle Peter Cole Passes Away At His Home Last Friday Morning. Mr. J.P. Cole of Ratclif, one of Gilmer County's oldest and most respected citizens, passed away Friday morning of last week after an illness of only a few days. Mr. Cole was in Ellijay Friday week and the editor remembers having a pleasant conversation with him and he seemed in his usual health but was taken the next day and died with enlarged prostate glands and urine poison after --gering (unreadable) and intense pain on Friday morning of last week. He was 76 years old and had been a life long church member and an earnest Christian gentleman, his membership being with the Nine Mile Methodist Church. In his death our county loses one of her best and most influential citizens and it is with profound sorrow that we chronicle his sad demise. Mr. Cole was a Mason and was laid to rest by that body with Masonic honors at Nine Mile graveyard on Saturday following in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends. Revs. N.L. Osborne and A.M. Johnson conducted the funeral services. He leaves a wife and several grown children to mourn his death, to all of whom the Courier offers condolences. A committee from the Masonic lodge was appointed to draft suitable resolutions upon his death, which resolutions will be published in our next issue. [Notes from Cassandra Robertson Newby, gr-gr-gr grandaughter of John Peter Cole II: The Nine Mile Methodist Church later became the Mountaintown Baptist Church and Nine Mile graveyard is now Mountaintown Cemetery.]
