It was established by Nathan T. Tabor and John E. Robeson in 1887.The abundance of great oaks in the region prompted the name "Oakland". Originally a private school, Oakland was operated for many years as a church school by the M.E. Church (South). Students attended the academy from this and surrounding counties. In 1929, when the private school was discontinued, the property was deeded to Gilmer County for a county school. Fires destroyed the school in 1929, 1940, and 1955. The building currently in use was erected following the 1955 fire. This photo was taken in 1903 when C.F. Owen headed the institution, with Miss Carol Shelton assisting and also teaching some music.
