Transcribed by Amy Hedrick, email: amylyn@btconline.net This cemetery is located on Jekyll Island. When you pass the toll booth, make a left u-turn like you are going to leave the island. Get in the far right lane though and go towards the historic district. You will make the first right turn onto Stable Road. Drive about 3.6 miles and the cemetery will be on your left off of the road. It is across from some old ruins. There is an historic sign with the DuBignon story on it on the side of the road before you turn into the cemetery. The Du Bignon family is descended from an old noble family from Brittany; the family name was Poulain, but in America it soon became known as Du Bignon from it's American founder, Christophe-Anne Poulain du Bignon. Joseph DuBignon was born on Jekyll Island in 1814, the fifth child of Henry Charles Poulain du Bignon and Ann Amelia Nicolau. On January 22, 1839 he married Felicite Elizabeth Riffault. Joseph was a 1st lieutenant Glynn County Volunteers, 1839; a member of the Georgia House of Representatives for Glynn County from 1845; a justice of the Inferior Court Glynn County, 1846. His wife is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Brunswick, Georgia. Marie Felicite Riffault was Joseph's mother-in-law. Marie's full name was Marie Anne Felicite Grand Dutreuilh, she was a refugee from Saint-Domingue and married to Charles Pierre Riffault, a refugee from the French Revolution. Ann Amelia Nicolau Du Bignon was Joseph's mother. She was born in France in 1787, a member of a family from Bordeaux, France, who settled in Glynn County, Georgia and made their home at Marengo. As Ann Amelia was an orphan, her brother, Bernard Nicolau, acted as her guardian so that she could marry Charles Poulain du Bignon on January 18, 1808 in Savannah, Georgia. Ann's grave stone is broken very badly and some of the pieces are missing so I have inserted (Broken away) where the stone was broken and the pieces missing. Hector DeLiyannis was an employee of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel who drowned in the river and was buried in the DuBignon Cemetery. He was known as "Hector the Greek." He is no relation to the DuBignons. George F. Harvey was also an employee of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel who drowned on the same day as Hector. He is not a relative of the DuBignons either. I have pictures of all of the stones. The following is a full transcription of the gravestones for all five graves: HECTOR DELIYANNIS NATIVE OF SYRMNA DROWNED ON JEKYL ISLAND MAR. 21, 1912 GEORGE F HARVEY NATIVE OF ENGLAND DROWNED ON JEKYL ISLAND MAR. 21, 1912 SACRED to the Memory of MARIE FELICITE RIFFAULT Born the 14th December 1776, In St. Domingo, And died at Brunswick, Ga The 6th April 1852 "Not only good and kind, But strong and Elevated was her mind, Fond to Oblige, too feeling to Offend.
