(Jim) Carroll williamcarrollj@bellsouth.net May 7, 2011, 6:54 pm The Brunswick News 8-25-1977 Mattie Keen Dies After Extended Illness Mrs. Mattie Lockhart "Granny" Keen, 83, a resident of 729 Norwich St., died at the Brunswick hospital Tuesday after an extended illness. She had been a resident of Brunswick most of her life. She had been a soldier in the Salvation Army for many years. She was commissioned as a visiting sergeant in 1946 and home league chaplin in 1947. In 1954 she was chosen Mother of the Year in the home league. She was a Sunday School teacher for 52 years. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mary Lockhart of Augusta and Mrs. Essie Shadron of Brunswick; three sons, Howard L. Keen of Waverly, Ovid J. Keen of Savannah, and Grover C. Keen of Brunswick; 18 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild; and several nephews, nieces, and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 3pm Friday at the Salvation Army chapel with Major Tom Richmond, the Revs. Henry Sapp and Dave Medeiros officiating. Interment will be in Palmetto Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Charles Smith, Robert Corley, George Chaney, Gene Evans, Gary krauch, and Bertie Robson. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. W. O. Inman Jr., Dr. W. A. Synder, Dr. E. R. Jennings, Dr. B. A. Addison, Dr. Richard W. Egan, Dr. B. C. Futch, the Rev. H. D. Spivey, Tom Mullins, Charlie Jarvis, Charles Pickren and Robert Shadron. The body will remain in the funeral home until 2pm Friday and will be taken to the church to await the hour of services. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Additional Comments: Mattie was born 7 Sep 1893 to Issac Simpson Lockhart and Ella Hudson Durouzeaux Lockhart. Georgia death certificate #027213.
