Rufus Layfield Dies at Hospital

Rufus Layfield, 49 Glynnvilla Apartments, died at the Brunswick hospital 
early this morning. Mr. Layfield was 68 years of age and had lived in 
Brunswick for a number of years.

Funeral services in charge of Edo Miller & Sons will be held in the chapel 
of the funeral home tomorrow at 4 p.m. with Rev. H. K. Neal of Pine Ridge 
Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Palmetto Cemetery.

Survivors include besides his wife Elizabeth, three sons, Rufus, Brunswick, 
Cecil, Asheville, N.C., and Ray, of Tampa, Fla.; four daughters, Mrs. John 
R. Williamson, Jr., Mrs. H. H. Hughes, and Mrs. G. H. Bunkley, of Brunswick, 
and Mrs. Vernon Ricks, of Savannah; one brother, Ed Layfield, Columbus, Ga.; 
two sisters, Miss Maude Layfield, and Mrs. M. J. Jinks, of Macon, and twelve 
grandchildren.

Active pallbearers will be Julian Tarle, Johnny Owens, W. H. Bunkley, A. D. 
Carroll, Davis Gibbs, and Fred Sandifer.



Additional Comments:
Rufus was the youngest child of James (Jim) Monroe Layfield and Mary 
Elizabeth Watson. He was born on 4 Mar 1890 in Taylor County, Georgia. Rufus 
was married to Sarah Elizabeth (Lizzie) Boswell and they had eight children. 
The family lived in Junction City, Ga. at the time of the 1910 census and by 
the 1920 census, the family had moved to Brunswick, Ga. where Rufus and 
Lizzie would live the rest of their lives. 

Rufus was the only brother of my great-grandfather Ed Layfield. I would like 
to correspond with anyone researching the Layfield family.
