Mroczkowski Dies in Washington After Long Illness Capt. Rufus E. Mroczkowski, 58, U.S. Coast Guard (ret.), former Brunswick resident, died yesterday in Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D.C., after an extended illness. He had resided in Orlando, Fla., following his retirement in 1964. Captain Mroczkowski was a graduate of Glynn Academy and of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn. In 1931, and there followed a long and distinguished career in this branch of the service. His last assignment was at U.S. Coast Guard headquarters in New York City. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Judy Hartgen, South Portland, Maine, and Jean Mroczkowski, Orlando; a son, Harry Mroczkowski, also of Orlando; his father, T. M. Mroczkowski, and a brother, James Mroczkowski, both of Brunswick; and an aunt, Mrs. J. A. Dankel, Waycross. Funeral arrangements are incomplete but interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery. Additional Comments: Rufus was the son of Thaddeus Mroczkowski and Ruby Layfield. He was born in Junction City, Georgia on 7 Sep 1907. He was married to Jacqueline Potter on 2 Nov 1934 in Spring Lake Michigan. I would like to correspond with anyone researching the Layfield-Mroczkowski families.
